MoisturePlus, also known as Advanced Medical Optics MoisturePlus Complete Multipurpose Solution, is the brand name of a contact lens solution suspected of causing serious, potentially blinding eye infections in its users. MoisturePlus was recalled by Advanced Medical Optics in late May of 2007 after U.S. public health authorities found that its users were at elevated risk of developing a potentially blinding eye infection called Acanthamoeba keratitis. Normally quite rare, Acanthamoeba keratitis is caused by infection of the cornea with microscopic parasites that cause eye pain, redness, excessive tears and a sensation of something caught in the eye. If it's not treated in time, the infection can scar or tear the cornea, robbing victims of some or all of their eyesight. Contact lens wearers who have purchased MoisturePlus are advised to immediately discard the solution as well as any lenses or equipment that it may have touched.
Problems With MoisturePlus
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention received complaints about MoisturePlus as early as 2005, but Advanced Medical Optics did not recall the solution until spring of 2007. The CDC's initial investigation identified 138 Americans with Acanthamoeba keratitis; 58% of the patients who remembered using a specific contact lens solution had used MoisturePlus. Indeed, the agency's preliminary report said infected patients were seven times more likely to have used MoisturePlus than healthy contact lens wearers. Although scientists have not yet been able to confirm that this batch of MoisturePlus is contaminated, the product has been recalled because of contamination before. In November of 2006, MoisturePlus sold in Japan tested positive for bacterial contamination, sparking a worldwide recall of certain lots of MoisturePlus. Federal health authorities and the company are working to discover why the latest batch of MoisturePlus causes Acanthamoeba keratitis.Injuries From MoisturePlus
Because Acanthamoeba keratitis is so rare, and because its symptoms look at first like the symptoms of a less serious eye infection, it is sometimes not diagnosed until the disease has already ravaged the victim's corneas. The FDA has issued guidelines to eye doctors warning them about the MoisturePlus-related outbreak, but for some patients, it may already be too late. If a victim has already sustained serious damage to the cornea, he or she may need a cornea transplant in order to see again. If you or someone you love has sustained serious injuries from using MoisturePlus, you are entitled to ask for compensation in a court of law. You may be able to collect damages to cover past and future medical bills, missed work, pain and suffering, loss of vision and other injuries.
