The MoisturePlus recall was a May 2007 recall of a contact lens solution strongly suspected of causing eye infections that may partially or totally blind their victims. The solution, MoisturePlus, came under suspicion after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention received multiple reports of an outbreak of Acanthamoeba keratitis, a rare but serious eye infection caused by tiny waterborne parasites. Symptoms of Acanthamoeba keratitis often look like those of other, less serious, infections at first -- redness, tears, pain, blurry vision -- but can turn quite serious. If not treated, Acanthamoeba keratitis can tear or scar the cornea, robbing victims of their sight. After a study, the CDC found a strong association between the infection and the use of MoisturePlus, and called on the Food and Drug Administration to ask for a MoisturePlus recall.
The Suspicious History Behind The MoisturePlus Recall
This is not the first MoisturePlus recall. In November of 2006 -- only six months before the current MoisturePlus recall began -- Advanced Medical Optics started a worldwide recall of specific lots of MoisturePlus after Japanese government testing turned up bacterial contamination, potentially causing bacterial keratitis. The subsequent investigation showed that the contamination came from a MoisturePlus factory in China. In the current MoisturePlus recall, scientists have not yet been able to prove that MoisturePlus is contaminated with Acanthamoeba. However, the CDC's study showed that those with Acanthamoeba keratitis were seven times more likely to have used MoisturePlus than contact lens users without the infection. And even though the CDC's investigation is ongoing, the agency's preliminary report strongly warned users of MoisturePlus to discard the solution and everything it may have touched, including their lenses. Anyone participating in the MoisturePlus recall should also call the manufacturer's MoisturePlus recall hotline at 1-888-899-9183 to get a refund or replacement for their tainted solution. What Can MoisturePlus Recall Victims Do?
If you or someone you care about is involved in the MoisturePlus recall, it's important that you know your legal rights. Under the law, Advanced Medical Optics must replace or refund its product without forcing MoisturePlus recall participants to sign anything that waives their access to the courts, or anything they do not understand. Injured victims of the MoisturePlus recall may be able to sue for the funds to cover their past and future medical bills, loss of vision, loss of independence, loss of a job that requires clear vision and emotional trauma, among other things.
