The Moisture Plus recalls are two recalls of the same contact lens solution by the same manufacturer, Advanced Medical Optics, that took place between November of 2006 and May of 2007. Both Moisture Plus recalls were prompted by reports of suspected or actual contamination that can cause serious, potentially blinding eye infections. The first of the Moisture Plus recalls came after several lots of Moisture Plus were found to have bacterial contamination, which can cause bacterial keratitis, an eye infection that can completely destroy the cornea in as little as 48 hours. The second of the Moisture Plus recalls, announced in May of 2007, came after U.S. public health authorities received reports of an outbreak of Acanthamoeba keratitis, a similar disease caused by contact with a waterborne parasite called Acanthamoeba. The first of the Moisture Plus recalls was spurred by testing of lots of Moisture Plus sold in Japan. After finding bacterial contamination in those lots, the manufacturer, Advanced Medical Optics, traced the contamination to its factory in China, where it found that half of all Moisture Plus made during that time had put out an unsafe, contaminated product. The second of the Moisture Plus recalls was initiated in late spring of 2007 after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified at least 138 cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis. The infection is normally quite rare, even among contact lens users, but began to be reported in growing numbers after January of 2005. After studying the issue, the CDC found that users of Moisture Plus were seven times more likely to have the infection than users of other contact lens solutions. Like bacterial keratitis, Acanthamoeba keratitis is difficult to diagnose because its early symptoms resemble those of other common eye infections, like pinkeye or herpes simplex. However, if left untreated, the infections can ravage the cornea -- the part of the eye responsible for 80% of our vision -- causing it to scar or tear and robbing the victims or part or all of their sight.
