Contact lens solution maker Advanced Medical Optics launched a Moisture Plus recall in May of 2007 in response to reports that associated its contact lens solution, Moisture Plus, with a rare but serious eye infection called Acanthamoeba keratitis. The infection is caused by microscopic parasites called Acanthamoeba that, when they come into contact with the human eye, cause an infection that may lead to permanent blindness if not controlled in time. After receiving numerous reports of the infection, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended a Moisture Plus recall. The FDA complied, and Advanced Medical Optics announced a voluntary Moisture Plus recall. Contact lens wearers are urged to participate in the Moisture Plus recall by immediately throwing away the solution and any lenses or other equipment that may have come into contact with it, then contacting the manufacturer's Moisture Plus recall hotline.
Moisture Plus Recall History
This is not the first Moisture Plus recall to take place in recent months. Its manufacturer also initiated a Moisture Plus recall in November of 2006 in response to reports that certain lots of Moisture Plus had been contaminated with bacteria at a Chinese factory, potentially causing bacterial keratitis. The new Moisture Plus recall was announced about six months later. While no scientists have yet been able to prove that Moisture Plus is contaminated with Acanthamoeba, the CDC's initial study showed that users of Moisture Plus were seven times more likely to become infected than those who used other contact lens solutions. Those who do become infected are at risk for serious complications. If the infection doesn't respond to treatment, victims' corneas may be scarred or even torn, resulting in permanent blindness that can only be corrected with a cornea transplant.Options for Those Participating in the Moisture Plus Recall
It's important that those who are affected by the Moisture Plus recall know their legal rights. Advanced Medical Optics is legally required to replace its defective product or refund the payments made by those who purchased it. Those who have been injured by using Moisture Plus also have the legal right to hold Advanced Medical Optics liable for its actions in a court of law. Victims of the Moisture Plus recall may ask a court to compensate them for their medical bills, lost lenses and equipment and any other economic costs they may face, such as the cost of a cornea transplant. They may also ask for compensation for non-economic losses, like the loss of quality of life that faces those who are permanently blinded by another person's actions. If you or someone you care about was affected by the Moisture Plus recall, you should consider contacting an attorney in your area immediately. A Moisture Plus recall attorney can help you understand your legal rights and options during the Moisture Plus recall.Moisture Plus Recall Case Evaluation Form
