Moisture Plus, also known as Complete Moisture Plus Multipurpose Solution, is the brand name of a contact lens solution made by Advanced Medical Optics. The company voluntarily recalled Moisture Plus on May 25, 2007 after a study by public health authorities concluded that Moisture Plus may cause a serious and potentially blinding infection of the eye called Acanthamoeba keratitis. Contact lens wearers who have purchased Moisture Plus are urged to call the company at 1-888-899-9183 for instructions on how to return Moisture Plus for a refund, or exchange it for another product not suspected of causing permanent eye damage.
Moisture Plus May Transfer Parasites to the Eye
Contact lens wearers use Moisture Plus to rinse, store and clean their contact lenses. Like all contact lens solutions, Moisture Plus is intended to be in direct contact with the human eye, and therefore must be sterile. However, research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has linked the solution with Acanthamoeba keratitis, an infection caused by contact with a water-borne parasite. While there is no proof yet that Moisture Plus is contaminated, the CDC has concluded that patients with the infection are seven times more likely to be a user of Moisture Plus than healthy contact lens wearers. Officials are researching the Acanthamoeva keratitis outbreak to see if they can establish whether Moisture Plus is tainted. In the meantime, the FDA is cautioning contant lens wearers to stop using Moisture Plus, throw away any lenses and containers used with Moisture Plus and see their doctors if they have any of the symptoms of Acanthamoeba keratitis, which include redness, tearing, feeling something caught in the eye, eye pain, blurred vision and light sensitivity.Moisture Plus Users Risk Blindness
If it's caught early enough, Acanthamoeba keratitis can be treated with antibacterial eye drops and other non-invasive measures. However, the infection is sometimes misdiagnosed because its early symptoms resemble those of other, less serious eye infections like conjunctivitis. The FDA has asked doctors to stay aware of the outbreak, particularly if their patients use Moisture Plus. But if Acanthamoeba keratitis is not diagnosed soon enough, it could cause the cornea to scar or tear, causing total or partial blindness. For these patients, a cornea transplant is their only hope of seeing clearly again.Legal Rights of Moisture Plus Users
If you or someone you love has developed an eye infection after using Moisture Plus, you have the right to hold the manufacturer responsible for your injuries. Blindness is a serious, life-altering impairment that can affect every part of an injured person's life, from choice of work to relaxing with a good book. You should consider contacting an experienced attorney in your area to discuss whether you have a Moisture Plus lawsuit and protect your legal rights.Moisture Plus Case Evaluation Form
