AMO Moisture Plus is a contact lens solution manufactured by Advanced Medical Optics of Santa Ana, California. AMO Moisture Plus came under fire in early 2007 when federal health authorities began to receive reports of an outbreak of serious eye infections among users of AMO Moisture Plus. The infection, Acanthamoeba keratitis, is caused by an infestation of a parasite commonly found in the natural environment. Acanthamoeba keratitis is rare; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that one or two contact lens wearers in a million will normally contract the disease. It is most common in people with previous damage to the cornea, or those who do not care for their contact lenses correctly. However, CDC research shows that patients with the infection are seven times more likely to have used AMO Moisture Plus than healthy contact lens wearers.
AMO Moisture Plus May Cause Serious Eye Infections, Even Blindness
A patient develops Acanthamoeba keratitis when the Acanthamoeba parasite is physically transferred to his or her eye, causing the cornea (the surface of the eye) to become deeply infected.. Symptoms of an AMO Moisture Plus-related Acanthamoeba keratitis infection of the cornea include eye pain, redness, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, feeling that something is caught in the eye, excessive tearing and discharge. If the infection isn't treated in time, it can cause serious eye pain as well as scarring or tearing of the cornea, which can cause patients to lose part or all of their sight. This was the case for about a quarter (24%) of victims in the CDC's preliminary report, who had to have corneal transplants.Legal Rights of AMO Moisture Plus Victims
In response to the CDC's research, Advanced Medical Optics voluntarily recalled AMO Moisture Plus on May 25, 2007. However, the tainted AMO Moisture Plus solution may have been on the market for more than two years beforehand; the CDC is investigating all cases that were diagnosed after January 1, 2005. Of the Acanthamoeba keratitis patients interviewed by the CDC who used contact lens solution, 58% had used AMO Moisture Plus. Contact lens solution makers, like all manufacturers, have a legal obligation to ensure that their products are safe to use, and to pull products from the market when they might cause serious harm to their users. That obligation is especially important for those companies that products for use with one of our most important and sensitive areas -- our eyes. If you or someone you care about has been harmed by AMO Moisture Plus, you have the right to hold the negligent manufacturer responsible for its actions. You should consider contacting an experienced AMO Moisture Plus attorney in your state for to discuss the possibility of an AMO Moisture Plus lawsuit.AMO Moisture Plus Case Evaluation Form
