Acanthamoeba
A microscopic, water-borne parasite that can invade the cornea.
Acanthamoeba Keratitis
An infection caused by the Acanthamoeba parasite. Primarily occurs in contact lens wearers and recently Advanced Medical Optics' Complete Moisture Plus Contact Lens Solution has been linked to increased rates of infection. Primary risk factors for the infection include swimming with lenses in, storing contact lenses in homemade contact solutions, and poor contact lens hygiene. The infection typically is diagnosed by the presence of severe pain and redness. Treatment with multiple antibiotics generally is necessary and hospitalization frequently occurs. Therapy and treatment can last for over a year.
Achromatopsia
A hereditary condition in which certain receptors are lacking in the retina. Consequently, people with this condition are nearly or completely colorblind and have bad vision.
Advanced Medical Optics
The manufacturer of Complete Moisture Plus Contact Lens Solution; this contact solution has been linked to a dangerous infection known as acanthamoeba keratitis.
Accommodation
The process by which the lens of the eye adjusts to focus on objects at different distances. The ability to accommodate slowly decreases with age.
Allergy
A reaction of the body's immune system to a foreign substance. Allergic reactions can include swollen eyelids.
Amblyopia
A condition that occurs in children when one eye has worse vision than the other. If the condition is left untreated, vision will not develop properly and one eye will have poor vision.
Aniridia
An absent or partially absent iris. This condition is usually congenital.
Anisometropia
A difference in the refractive error of the eyes. This occurs, for example, if one eye is nearsighted and the other is farsighted.
Aphakia
Occurs when the lens of the eye is missing, often because of cataract surgery.
Aqueous Humor
The clear, watery fluid that is between the lens and the cornea.
Astigmatism
A refractive error that is the result of an abnormally shaped cornea or lens. This causes the eye to be unable to focus clearly on an image. Can be worsened by myopia or hyperopia.
Alpha-2 Agonists
A medication that is used in the treatment of glaucoma. It works by reducing the production and increasing the drainage of aqueous humor. This works to reduce pressure in the eye.
Antibiotic
A chemical that inhibits the growth of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, or protozoans. Can be used in the treatment of acanthamoeba keratitis, a bacterial infection that has been linked to use of Complete Moisture Plus Contact Lens Solution.
